One of the first things we were advised to do at the start of the second semester was to visit a company in which we can see how multi-media designers work from a day to day basis. This was not just to visit a company but to see our opportunities and future with an education in multimedia design.

Within the group we had many ideas of who to contact but we wanted to keep it as local as possible to better out chance of getting a response. My friend Alexandra actually researched companies with their head offices in Odense and contacted them from there. I wrote out to TV2 Fyn as I saw then had an office quite close to the school but the replied weeks after we finished this small project.
Alexandra reached out to a local clothing company called Nielsens to see if we could meet and know about their work lifestyle as a multimedia designer or other similar roles.
I never really heard of Nielsens until I saw the logo. Ive seen them a couple times when I go to the mall, but never really thought about going in as I had an impression it was a store target to older women.

The Day of the Visit
Their head office is situated just outside of Odense in a town called Sanderum, in which we met a nice lady called Nanna in which we have been in contact with.

Nanna is a project leader for Nielsens where she is responsible for managing projects, assigning tasks, and ensuring that team members work well together. She is the one who we spent the majority of our time with both touring the office but also interviewing her.
Nanna is part of a team in the office that is responsible for anything artistic and technological part of Nielsens. We also met other workers who specialised in logistics, website management, UX and UI design, customer service and a graphic designer. This whole team consisted of around 10 people, and it really showed that there are a lot of different roles involved in making the company.

We also had the opportunity to sit down with Nanna to ask more specific questions about her role in the company. She showed us some programs she uses as a project leader such as Monday to track the progress of certain projects. We instantly though of SCRUM as this was basically SCRUM but under a different face but still with the same functions, and similarly Nanna is a SCRUM master. She also showed us how she plans content and the use of AI in some of their works.
As a student studying multimedia design is was so inspiring and comforting to see that we had many areas we could go into and visiting Nielsens was a great eye opener. I saw myself ‘hypothetically’ in the different roles we saw at their office and just told myself that multimedia designers take on different roles but are needed everywhere.
Presentation
We presented our findings in front of the whole semester to explain who we visited, what we learnt, and our reflections. It was also interesting to see what other groups were doing to see what companies they contacted to really open my perspective or where I can end up in my practical.
This got me thinking about already looking at different companies for my practical phase. I really have my eyes set out on Legoland or Lego (I’ve worked at Legoland) as its an international company, they need a lot of multi media designers, and they have an amazing work environment. I also thought about taking an internship abroad home in Tokyo but I am not sure yet.
Reflection
I am really happy about having visited a company and seen multi media design in action through different people. It gives a sense of security and comfort knowing I can branch out in different areas and that all companies need them in one way or another.
