Motion Graphics

In this particular lesson we learned how to animate moving graphics in AfterEffects. In preparation for this lesson we had to watch a few videos on different things we could do on the programme for example motion blur, motion track, masking, etc. As well as read on the power of visual story telling and how we can better create value and meaning throughout our work.

When the lesson came, we had a short introduction into animating infographics. This can be a growing bar chart, pie chart, percentages, and others. We had the chance to play around with how to connect different elements to each other (text and shapes).

Our teacher later then tasked us to create a short infographic animation based on the data we collect from peoples morning routines. I created a set of questions in which I wanted to ask my participants based on my own mourning routine and compare the results.

These were the set of questions I sent out:

  1. What time do you wake up for school/work?
  2. Do you shower in the morning or in the evening the day before?
  3. Do you eat breakfast on a regular basis?
  4. IF YOU EAT BREAKFAST do you usually eat bread or rice?
  5. Do you study the Bible?
  6. IF YOU DO do you do a study session during breakfast?
  7. Do you brush you teeth before or after breakfast
  8. Do you floss?
  9. How long does your morning routine typically last?

I offered different ways to answer each questions; both qualitative and quantitative to collect interesting and unique data. I sent it out to my friends on instagram asking them if they had a minute to spare if they could participate in my survey. The reason I chose this instead of sending it out to my class group chat was down to the difference of culture and background. Based on this data I have collected I planned out how I wanted to present it in my animation infographic.

My initial goal for this was to create animation graphic for each questions and answer however I ran into some trouble with rendering the animation and only animated 3 of them. I also drew inspiration from motion graphics I have seen on youtube with voice overs and sound effects and decided to implement them into my animation.

I overall enjoyed the lesson as I can see myself working with such thing in my own free time displaying stats from different areas. This can also be useful in general to display any information of any sort in an interesting and entertaining way.
