We finally had our first introduction class to HTML and CSS coding. Our teacher Thomas gave us some important words before actually getting to the coding part, that we read theory first and put it to practise in class, and that whatever we should find our own motivation to learn the different goals in class. He gave us different platforms in which we can further increase our skill and knowledge in code like in CodeAcademy, EncodeApp, and LinkedIn Learning. I knew outside options were always available because I knew I would have a hard time following in class due to learning a new language coding, and being taught code in a language I’m not fluent in.
Prior to the lesson we were assigned some homework which explains what HTML, CSS, and Javascript is and the basics of html. At first it was hard to follow as I didn’t know how to practise it and I also didn’t know the video tutorial was actually interactive.
The Lesson
After downloading Visual Studio Code, Thomas set up various exercises for us to do. The first one was how to create a title and a paragraph tag. I didn’t know how to do it right away so I rewatched the video from the assigned homework. After inputting all the code, whether it worked or not, he then later explained how to write the correct lines of code and what each of the structures meant. And to build upon then each exercise was to add certain elements such as a picture.
I was very well behind everyone because I got confused and worked at my own pace and in English using the video to prevent further confusion. I eventually got in and was so proud of getting it I sent it to my father.
Learning anything new is never easy at the start and requires great patience and effort. I wasn’t totally thrilled about learning code as it scared me. However, through trial and error and working at my own pace and finally achieving the goal of the lesson I felt so proud and motivated to continue. This goes without saying that the rest of the coding journey will not be an easy journey, but by working with things that allow me to work better and be more motivated will allow me to achieve my goals. This also made me realise that compared to other things I will need to put more effort and outside time into coding, but I am more than excited to see all the possibilities I can create and learn with coding.
